Internal cylindrical grinding

Internal cylindrical grinding is one of the basic methods of finish machining, making it possible to obtain a diameter dimension with an accuracy of 1-2 micrometers and a work surface roughness of class 8 – 10. But in addition to the basic task of machining of internal cylindrical surfaces, it is also possible, with the internal grinding machines, to grind conical surfaces, as well as faces at a single workpiece fixture. The hole grinding process is performed by a grinding wheel mounted on the end of an extension mounted on a spindle. Typically, the rotary feed is performed by the workpiece. In occasional cases, the spindle with the mounted grinding wheel.

Internal cylindrical grinding – types.

We can distinguish between two basic methods of hole grinding:

  • longitudinal grinding with gradual infeed at the end of the wheel stroke, or with continuous infeedtransverse or pull-in grinding, where there is a continuous infeed of the grinding wheel relative to the workpiece.

Internal grinding machines – basic work units.

The basic working units of hole grinding machines allow a number of variations in grinding the workpiece. One is the grinding wheel headstock driven by a high-speed electric motor or an air turbine. Another is the workpiece headstock with independent drive (stepped or stepless). In addition to this, the feed movement mechanisms are important components of a internal grinding machine. These should allow for manual and step feed, continuous automatic feed or step feed achieved via an electrically or hydraulically driven ratchet mechanism and a rolling screw gear. No less important for the whole process of hole grinding are the mechanisms for manual feed of the table itself, the turning of the workpiece headstock and the ability to set up and put into operation the wheel dressing device.

The size of the grinding machines owned by our company imposes limitations on the size of the workpiece. And so:

  • grinding diameter – means the maximum diameter of the hole we are able to grind. In our case, it is 150 mmGrinding length – this is the maximum possible length (depth) of the hole we are able to grind with one continuous longitudinal movement of the grinding wheel. In our case, this length is 200 mm.
