Hole boring

Hole boring is a type of machining most often carried out on horizontal bench or plate boring machines. Horizontal table boring machines are most commonly used for machining holes and slots in the following machine components:

  • bodies,
  • crane arms,
  • large components of machine mechanism kinematics,
  • steel structures
  • tanks.

Structurally, the holes have parallel axes and are located on a single machining plane or on parallel planes. During hole boring on the boring machine, the workpiece is clamped to the table, as in other operations on the boring machine. The table itself is in a cross-hatched arrangement. It performs feed movements in the X – Z axes. The spindle performs vertical feed movement in the Y axis. The spindle itself can also be extended in the Z-axis direction.

Hole boring – division.

When boring holes, a tool called a boring bar is fixed in the spindle of the boring machine. With regard to the type of tool used, we can divide hole boring operations into:

  • coarse boring – these can be carried out with milling heads with the appropriate cutting edge geometry and can also be carried out by using single-edged boring bars based on T or C type cutting insert geometries. Step boring bars are especially suitable for this operation for series production.
  • finishing boring – can be realised using precision boring bars – so-called boring heads with adjustable cutting tool advance..

At Conmatec.pl, while carrying out unit and small-batch production on the TOS VARNSDORF boring machine, we have the possibility of performing hole boring with the following boundary geometrical parameters: table size 1200 x 1200 mm; X – Y – Z axis travels: 1250 – 1250 – 1250 mm. Equipped with HEIDENHAIN scales, the machine’s positioning accuracy in the X-Y-Z axes is 0.02 mm – thus enabling very precise machining. The following are examples of boring work in the manufacture of machine components.
