Machining of large components

The machining of large workpieces is an extremely complex issue that is influenced by many elements, not only technological or tool-related. However, when machining large components, tooling issues play a leading role. A comprehensive look at the manufacturing processes of large components of various types, such as shafts, bodies, covers and sleeves, allows us to identify the most common machining operations. These are:

  • milling, i.e. machining of planes with rectilinear and curvilinear forms;
  • boring, i.e. machining of internal surfaces, particularly rotating surfaces; and
  • drilling, reaming, threading, generally referred to as hole machining..

The key point of machining of large workpieces is primarily their size. This brings with it difficulties in terms of the selection of cutting tools and the appropriate choice of machining parameters. It is the resultant of these two factors that has a decisive impact on machining accuracy.

Machining large workpieces and cutting tools.

The appropriate selection of cutting tools involved in machining processes should be based on technological criteria, technical criteria and economic criteria, which include:

  • Technological criteria, such as, but not limited to: the possibility of shaping specific surfaces, the right combination of workpiece materials in relation to the tool, the right tool resistance to wear (tool life), the right combination of cutting edge geometry and cutting conditions, the possibility of obtaining a suitable surface layer, the possibility of using a cooling fluid..
  • Technical criteria include the method of clamping and the type of toolholder on the machine tool, the possibility of checking the condition of the tool on the machine tool, the possibility of measuring and positioning the tool outside the machine tool, the possibility of supplying the cooling fluid through the tool..
  • Economic criteria are primarily tool life, but the price of the tool and its running costs, the time needed to replace the tool or its insert, the availability of the tool on the market, the possibility of using strenuous cutting parameters are also important.

Despite the many criteria mentioned above for machining large workpieces, the correct choice of cutting tool for tool life is considered to be the most important. The machining of large workpieces requires a precise tool selection. An incorrect tool selection can lead to a situation where the tool wears out when machining a large area. Replacing or sharpening the tool during the process can result in inaccurate machining. Inaccurate machining of the workpiece surface can create major problems during assembly.

Nowadays, machining technology for large components uses tools whose blades are made of superhard materials. These are modern tools made of cermet or carbide. Modern cermets have a structure formed by a core containing titanium carbide and a second hard phase, combined with a tungsten-rich cobalt bond. This combination of modern tool materials guarantees not only its resistance to wear, but also to plastic deformation. The cobalt contained in the binder, on the other hand, gives the tool a high impact strength.

Bearing in mind the requirements of our customers, we guarantee the highest quality in the manufacture of large-size parts. It is not only our knowledge and machinery that enables us to achieve and maintain this quality, but also our awareness of selecting the right cutting tools.
